National Ballet Day

Happy National Ballet Day!

National Ballet DayHello!

I know that I must have told my ballet failure story about a million times by now, but since I lack any imaginable skill as a ballerina, this is kind of all that I have to offer today! As a child, my mom signed me up for ballet lessons and I distinctly remember going to Payless Shoes with her to pick out my first pair of overpriced, soft pink ballet flats. That might have actually been my first attempt at entering the sports world. Spoiler alert: all other attempts ended in a similar downward spiral. I thought that I was doing decently well in the pre-K ballet class, but I was exceptionally bored. I didn’t want to learn the foot positions or how to count out the number of steps to walk across the room and hand off a flower with a curtsy. Instead, I did things my own way and added plenty of twirls, twists, jumps, and gestures to infuse my own style. I didn’t even make it to our first performance before my membership in the class was politely declined and I was asked not to come back. I think that even worse than being a bad dancer is not realizing the unfortunate truth. Even to this day, I have to remind myself that the beautiful shapes and smooth body lines that I imagine I am creating are not transferring successfully into the real world. Sometimes I still think that I have the super skinny, bony body from my childhood and also have to suffer shocking shift of reality when I pass a mirror. I want to be ballerina or gymnast so badly. I want to have grace, stamina, balance, and elegance in my movements! I suppose I have pretty decent balance, but one basic skill a dancer does not make. Break out your ballet shoes, or scarring memories, and celebrate happy holidays!

National Dance Like a Chicken Day!

Happy National Dance Like a Chicken Day!

National Dance Like a Chicken Day!Hello!

Like usual, I have stuffed my Saturday with way too many activities. However, the unexpected thing is that I forgot to schedule in the holiday! I have been super on my game recently to plan ahead for holidays, schedule in my photo sessions, and even, on occasion, write my blogs ahead of time when I know that I’m going to be massively swamped. Yet, here I am in my car at Oil Can Henry’s trying to do my most sly and discreet chicken dance and write up a blog with my thumbs on my iPhone. I turned the chicken dance song on super quiet to play in the background and I started jamming out with extra points for incognito style. I don’t think that any of the workers milling around me saw me snapping pictures and posing in the iconic hit points. However, I did hear one of the servicemen whistling the song while they were working, which I don’t assume was a coincidence! Now that I’m sitting in the Les Schwab waiting room getting my tires rotated before racing off to my haircut appointment, I’m very happy for the mobile nature of this project. Do the chicken dance or just race around like a chicken with its head cut off like I am today!

National Dance Day

Happy National Dance Day!

National Dance DayHello!

I’m not a dancer – shocker. My limbs flail more than my body floats and any opportunity that I have to flip my hair around in ecstatic head banging style is bound to be taken. When I’m dancing in public on the rare, if not extinct, occasions, I tone things down and do the awkward side step bobble with closed fist bopping motions along with an interested head nod in time. It wouldn’t be fair to society to unleash the fury of my dance moves without warning or an advised escape route. No, instead, I lock myself up in a little dance box and resign to modest bobbing and bopping. Today, I was granted a much needed stay at home day so I’m planning on just spending the afternoon expelling all of my stress energy and anxiety through a hard core dance session. It’s a no school day at my teaching site, the observation that I had lined up fell through, and I was advised that it wasn’t worth coming to the backup stack of meetings that are on the calendar. That’s fine with me! Trust me, I am more than happy to blast my Spotify discover playlist and rock out to an energetic blend of stomp and holler indie music paired with a fruitless photo session that only results in blurry, awkward duds. Dance your cares away. Happy holidays!

Happy National Dance Day!

national dance dayHello!

Believe it or not, I’ve always been a dancer at heart. I’ve always been in love with the tutu look and the long, slender legs of the ballerinas on point. Not to mention, the thrill of spinning and jumping – come on, how could that not be fun? But then again, don’t we always want what we can’t have? Sure, you could make the argument that if I had the right teachers and dedicated myself to it, I could be a dancer today instead of a musician. But then again, there are some people who just don’t have the knack for things. In general, I don’t have a knack for athletics of any kind, graceful and precise or not. It’s funny, though, because in my head I generally think that I’m doing pretty well. Like, my concept of what my body is doing is definitely not what’s happening in reality. Okay, it’s not actually funny from a personal perspective, horrifying actually, but for the sake of writing a blog that doesn’t put me in tears, it’s going to be funny. When I was younger, one of my favorite silly things to do was spin, twist, float, and glide across the hardwood floor while the microwave was heating up my food. My dad used to get annoyed with the sound of me thumping around in dance mode (for good reason – I was clumsy) so the sound of the microwave would mask it just enough to create a cover. I always thought that while I was spinning and making up dance poses, that I was creating really beautiful shapes. Then, one evening I watched myself move in the reflection of the big breakfast nook window and was wildly surprised to see my limbs flailing about in a manner that did not match my mental picture. Some of my hesitance toward the use of my body in any physical activity comes from that discomfort of looking awkward and moving without grace, which was inspired by plenty of comments from peers and adults alike. At 21 years old, I still twirl across the hardwood floors in my socks and dance when no one’s around. It makes me feel good to cut out the outside stigma and just embrace the virtual reality of myself as a skilled dancer. No matter how graceless these photos look, I promise that I will continue dancing like (and when) no one is watching and I hope that you do too. Happy holidays!

national lindy hop day

Happy World Lindy Hop Day!

national lindy hop dayHello!

The dancing continues today, though you have no put away your tap shoes and trade them out for swing dancing shoes. Have you ever heard of the lindy hop dance before? Like I said yesterday, I have little to no dance background so I’ve never heard of this dance style before, except for seeing the name come around every year on this holiday. According to this handy dance description, lindy hop was named after Charles Lindbergh’s flight to Paris when the newspapers read, “Lindy hops the Atlantic!” Also known as the jitterbug, lindy hop comes out of the Afro-Euro-American swing dance tradition with a unique joyfulness in practice. That’s partially why it’s a social dance – it’s just so much fun to do! The steps are uniquely rhythmic and gliding without any hops, like you might expect from the title. At the more challenging end of the dance skills, you’ll find really difficult aerial steps that require exact precision to master in flight. If you were getting together with friends for an authentic lindy hop dance party, you probably wouldn’t see any aerial steps because they’re really just for show offs in performance. Come on over to dance the lindy hop with me this evening, preferably if you actually know how. Let’s get social and dance – happy holidays!

national tap dance day

Happy National Tap Dance Day!

national tap dance dayHello!

First and foremost, today is National Memorial Day and I think it’s important that we take a moment to really think about the meaning behind the holiday. It’s not just about a long weekend, barbecues, and filled camp grounds; it’s not by luck or chance that we live in a free country. Thank you to all of the men and women who fight or have fought for the rights, freedoms, and liberties that we are blessed with in America. You truly are heroes.

On a sillier note that has literally no backstory or heartfelt meaning, unless you’re a diehard tap dancer, it’s National Tap Dance Day! I would have loved to break out my tap shoes and show off my skills but you won’t be seeing any cabrioles, charlestons, chassés, click toes, or cramprolls from these feet. (Yes, I totally looked up those references in a tap dancing terms dictionary.) My journey with dance was quite short, just long enough to buy an expensive pink leotard and attend a few weeks of class lessons before quietly being asked to reconsider my enrollment. I was a free spirited, gangly child with little to no interest in athletics of any kind, no matter what I told my parents at sign-up time. Before we even got to our first baby ballet recital, I was sick of things and didn’t have the patience to put up with the disastrously slow class place. I just wanted to twirl, jump, and twist in my cute little outfit like a real dancer. It goes without saying that I never moved on to tap class. Happy holidays!

happy national chicken dance day

Happy National Chicken Dance Day!

happy national chicken dance dayHello!

It’s one of those days (/weeks/years) that feels painfully endless! I mean, it’s 7:30 PM and I’m just now getting around to a little bit of chicken dancing. If I had my way, I would have been rocking out to the iconic tune all day long. Instead, I sat through a concert of classical vocal music, played in a trio of Brazilian chamber music, sang several global choral pieces, and played plenty of Brahms and Mendelssohn. It’s not so much worse, it’s just definitely different. I mean, there’s not nearly enough shimmying and clapping in Brahms 2nd symphony! … Though maybe there should be. No matter, though, because I’m making up for all of it now! As the sun fades, I’m home alone dancing the chicken dance with music at full blast, right alongside the hilarious dancing chicken sticker that I found in my photo editor app. We’re just two chicks getting our groove on and dancing like fools. Happy holidays!
