National Frozen Yogurt Day

Happy National Frozen Yogurt Day!

National Frozen Yogurt DayHello!

In case you haven’t heard, I’m a massive fan of ice cream and I guess frozen yogurt is okay on occasion too. I have to exercise my newly developed willpower every time I cross the freezer aisle because it’s all too tempting to reach in and fill my arms with Ben & Jerry’s. I even had to throw away my B&J coupons because I would use them as an excuse to talk myself into buying ice cream, get up to the check stand, and then realize that I left the coupon at home. The cycle continued for far too long before I had to be honest and admit that I was playing myself and would never actually remember to bring it. It’s a dangerous game! Lucky for me, I’m not that much of a fan of froyo so walking into Yogurt Extreme wasn’t an enormous risk for this recovering ice cream-aholic. A little bit of cake batter froyo with caramelized walnuts, crushed reeses peanut butter cups, crushed butterfinger, crushed oreo, a dusting of graham cracker, and a drizzle of hot fudge makes a pretty good combination. Don’t be fooled by the blue sky reflected in the door! As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot, it started hailing hard and I was trapped in my car in the driveway, eating my frozen yogurt and listening to the end of a Mahler symphony waiting for a break in the hail and rain. No matter how hard we wish in honor of the holiday, it’s simply not frozen yogurt season yet. Grab a spoon and celebrate! Happy holidays.

National Hot Tea Day

Happy National Hot Tea Day!

National Hot Tea DayHello!

Today’s highest temperature is forecasted to be a balmy 32 degrees! I seriously need a cup of hot tea this morning. Last night, Eric and I were in the middle of a fun gaming session when we heard a loud boom outside and the power shut off. Just as soon as I dug out candles and settled on the couch, he had his coat on and decided we still had time to make it for happy hour! I blew out the candles and we left our poor little kitty home in the dark to head out to our favorite local spot. When we couldn’t sit and snack any longer, we headed back home to find that the power situation had not been resolved. A neighbor said the power company’s estimate was to be fixed by 9 PM so we launched into phase two of our coping plan, packed a bag, and headed for my parent’s house. At least they had wifi and a working heater! I’m back home this morning and Eric is off at work, but our house is still a little chillier than normal because the heat was off for so long and the temperature has dropped to ridiculous temperatures. Like I said, I’m really thankful for the reminder to make a cup of hot tea this morning and the blissful opportunity to drink it with Spotify jams blasting and a kitty snuggled on my lap. What’s in your cup this morning?

National Sock Day

Happy National Sock Day!

National Sock DayHello!

Socks might be one of my favorite things in the world. Not in the sense that I buy really expensive, high end socks, collect them, or even treat them well, but just that I enjoy wearing them. I am constantly cold and even though I insist that our thermostat be set at a constant 74 degrees, I’m always wrapped up in a blanket. There’s no way that I could manage my life without a pair of socks to keep my feet warm! What about summer, you ask? The problem still remains. Even if it’s 90 degrees outside and you claim that every part of you is sweating, I still can’t stand the inevitable chill in my feet that occurs when they’re free of socks. Now, I’m not so obsessed or stupid that I would wear socks with my sandals, but there have been a few times that I have seriously considered it. Today, we pay tribute to the weirdly shaped foot coverings that keep your feet clean and cozy in every weather. Whether you’re a fan of funky toe socks, careless mis-matcher, connoisseur of fancy wool blends that are designed for a high class office, or just a regular joe schmo sock wearer like me, it’s time to celebrate the socks that we take for granted daily. I love you guys! Happy holidays!

National Bikini Day

Happy National Bikini Day!

National Bikini DayHello!

There was one little twist in the holiday summer picnic series that I wasn’t quite sure I could work out. Today is National Bikini Day and there are a couple things getting in the way of my celebration; namely, the lack of swim-worthy weather, the lack of open swimming water, and the lack of an appropriately sized bikini in my closet. I used to love swimming when I was a kid and we would spend the majority of summer days swimming in my neighbor’s pool or hanging out at the open swim time at the community pool. Now that I’m older, the things that I didn’t like about swimming overshadow what I used to love. Meeting other kids at the pool was always a blast and I loved trying to surf on the float mats or doing flips off of the high dive. Now that I’m an anti-social, low-key anxiety ridden married woman, the idea of meeting other people at the pool is just annoying and brings up all sorts of body image issues. And as much as I would love to see if my mat surfing skills are still up to par, I think that there might be angry parents around who insist that the toys should be returned to the kids. As for the high dive, I have turned into an absolute chicken in my old age and I’m not sure I could get myself to even climb the ladder anymore. Not to mention the fear of my itsy bitsy, teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini flying off! I think that it’s best if I keep my feet on dry land for this one and let my stylus draw on some celebration for a modest picnic experience. Happy holidays!

national ear muff day

Happy National Ear Muff Day!

national ear muff dayHello!

Apparently the style seasons are aren’t changing quickly because still couldn’t find ear muffs since last year’s ear muff adventure in celebration. I still don’t own a pair of my own and have yet to care enough to change that. I scrounged around in my closet for something similar and asked around with friends and family members to see if I had any ear-covering connections close by. Alas, no one in my inner circle cares enough about the warmth of their ears to purchase a set of ear muffs either. A couple people offered those cute knitted headbands and I had several winter hat offerings, but I was convinced that it wouldn’t be good enough for such a specific winter gear holiday. Turns out that’s all I could get my hands on. I don’t really have anything against winter accessories, but I rarely find myself using them. I, too, have a stash of a couple knitted beanies and warm caps, but they rarely come out my infrequent use box stuffed into the back of the closet. In fact, I’m pretty sure that the only time I break them out is for the one time a year that a couple flakes of snow fall to the ground. That’s about the extent of it. All of the other winter days of the year, I pull my hood up around my ears, gripe about the lack of summer weather relief, and contemplate purchasing a set of cute ear muffs for myself before continuing to trudge through the rain, wind, and cold to my initial destination without any shopping center detours. Do you have a pair of your own to keep your ears warm and toasty? Happy holidays!

national pepper pot day

Happy National Pepper Pot Day!

national pepper pot dayHello!

I was joking with Eric today that I’m becoming like the movie ‘Julie and Julia’ but instead of cooking my way through the Julia Child cookbook I’m cooking my way through the holidays! Today’s holiday celebrates a delicious, hearty soup with a peppery punch! I followed one of the trusty allrecipes.com instructions for pepper pot soup and we tossed all of the components into the crockpot this morning for a day full of slow cooking. By the time we were ready for dinner, so was my soup! It’s funny, though, because everyone in the house seemed to have a different opinion about the amount of pepper in it. My mouth was on fire, Eric thought it might have had just a bit too much spice, mom absolutely loved it, and dad said that he had to shake loads of extra pepper in  because it was far too bland. That soup pot was peppery enough for me! On a side note, can you spot the difference between the two photos? Happy holidays!
