National Frozen Yogurt Day

Happy National Frozen Yogurt Day!

National Frozen Yogurt DayHello!

In case you haven’t heard, I’m a massive fan of ice cream and I guess frozen yogurt is okay on occasion too. I have to exercise my newly developed willpower every time I cross the freezer aisle because it’s all too tempting to reach in and fill my arms with Ben & Jerry’s. I even had to throw away my B&J coupons because I would use them as an excuse to talk myself into buying ice cream, get up to the check stand, and then realize that I left the coupon at home. The cycle continued for far too long before I had to be honest and admit that I was playing myself and would never actually remember to bring it. It’s a dangerous game! Lucky for me, I’m not that much of a fan of froyo so walking into Yogurt Extreme wasn’t an enormous risk for this recovering ice cream-aholic. A little bit of cake batter froyo with caramelized walnuts, crushed reeses peanut butter cups, crushed butterfinger, crushed oreo, a dusting of graham cracker, and a drizzle of hot fudge makes a pretty good combination. Don’t be fooled by the blue sky reflected in the door! As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot, it started hailing hard and I was trapped in my car in the driveway, eating my frozen yogurt and listening to the end of a Mahler symphony waiting for a break in the hail and rain. No matter how hard we wish in honor of the holiday, it’s simply not frozen yogurt season yet. Grab a spoon and celebrate! Happy holidays.

National Groundhog Job Shadow Day

Happy National Groundhog Job Shadow Day!

National Groundhog Job Shadow DayHello!

I’ve seen the movie Groundhog Day, made little groundhog cards and banners in elementary school, and cast my vote 22 years in a row for the early arrival of spring, but I still have absolutely no idea how Groundhog Day actually works. I totally understand the purpose and validity of National Margarita Day – yum – and International Pillow Fight Day is just pure fun! Why is a confused groundhog worth celebrating? I always assumed that the folklore or weather prediction had to do with the specific behavior of the groundhog, not the clouds overhead. Now that I have spent some time googling, I actually feel rather silly that it took me this long to figure out. I have never attended a Groundhog Day ceremony, so I always imagined that they take a grumpy, blindfolded little groundhog out of his winter den and spin him around in circles. Then they put him back in his little hole, take off the blindfold, and watch him come out. If he comes out facing the giant lightbulb to his right, then he would theoretically not see his shadow and predict spring, and if he comes out of the hole facing to the left, he would see his looming shadow and predict winter. Apparently it’s actually a question of cloudy or clear skies and there is no lightbulb involved. Well, geez – I definitely think I can do that! In honor of shadowing Phil the Groundhog in his moment of glory, I walked outside to discover a densely clouded sky. No matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t find a shadow, much less see my own! Does that mean that I predict an early spring? I can seriously get behind that. I guess it’s not too hard to do a groundhog’s job after all! Happy holidays.

National Don't Fry Day

Happy National Don’t Fry Day!

National Don't Fry DayHello!

I am about to bust out in song and start cheering the Friday anthem because I am so ready for the weekend. This week has been absolute insanity and very disjointed, leading me to believe that every day this week was Friday. Yes, that includes Monday. My cooperating teacher took most of the lead on the first two days this week, which means that I don’t have to do as much teaching while she’s on the podium, but I also get incredibly exhausted just sitting around and listening, but also having to keep my mind in the game so that when we switch to my pieces my brain hasn’t totally left the building. Wednesday I was out for an interview and then rushed back for our marimba dress rehearsal and concert. Then the last two days my cooperating teacher has been in Colorado training for a triathlon so it has been fully on my shoulders to do final preparation for our concert next week The students were just as antsy to get out of school for the long weekend as I was! Now that I’m home, completely beat and starving, but I have to resist the urge to eat anything fried. Lucky for me, this campus food cart closes after lunch, so it’s not even an option by the time I roll back into town. I’ll save your delicious fish and chips for another day. Happy holidays!

National Red Nose Day

Happy National Red Nose Day!

National Red Nose DayHello!

The clouds continue to lay over the area like a depressing, smothering blanket. Yet, as I glance outside at the drizzle of rain and blindingly white wall of clouds above, it’s also a little comforting. Today’s holiday is all about the reminder to put on sunscreen and protect your skin against the elements as we launch into spring and summer weather. I don’t expect to break out the sunblock this morning. Wearing a warm raincoat and ball cap over my unshowered ponytail, we made a thrift store trip over to the east side of town this morning before the rain set in and I picked up a book for $1 that caught my eye. We were wandering through a thrift and refurbished tech shop when I saw an old book called Creating Adventure Games on Your Computer. The copyright is 1983 and the first page lists Apple II, Atari, Coleco ADAM, Commodore 64, IBM PC, Texas Instruments TI 99/4a, TRS-80, and VIC 20 as appropriate microcomputers that are up for the programming task! It also explains that I should check to be sure that I have at least 24K of RAM to work with. This is seriously old school. I’m 99% sure that I won’t be able to figure out how to program this, but I’m going to try! Not to mention, my heart sank a little when Eric pointed out the program probably won’t even have any graphics and will probably just pose questions and results. It reads like there is the potential that I might be a little plus sign in wandering around in a text-based map six dimensional map. After all, it is designed for a 40-character width screen. With this new fun project and a lot of ‘fun’ stuff stacked on my to-do list, I’m looking forward to my lazy Saturday on the couch! Happy holidays!

National May Ray Day

Happy National May Ray Day!

National May Ray DayHello!

The weather has absolutely been taunting and teasing us recently! At the end of last week, it was pushing 90 degrees outside with stunning blue skies and strong gusts of hot wind. The very next day, though, we dropped thirty degrees and exchanged natural air flow for saturating rain and violent bursts of hail. The change was shocking and seriously uncomfortable, but we managed through it just to be jerked around again! I love Oregon, but spring can be downright tumultuous as we balance beautiful, sunny days that make you appreciate perfectly mild, bright afternoons next to drizzling or downright down pouring dark days that feel like the sun never reaches the high point at the middle of the day. Considering how connected my emotions are to the weather, spring is a trying time. The view outside from our balcony looks like a lot like it would from out of  the window of an airplane because it feels like we’re just living in a cloud right now. The air is saturated with little drops of water, there’s always something coming down, and the sun is playing a hardcore game of hide and seek. Wishing for more rays another day. Happy holidays!

National Lemonade Day

Happy National Lemonade Day!

National Lemonade DayHello!

What could possibly make this relaxing, summery Sunday any better? I think that a refreshing glass of lemonade might do the trick! I really don’t intend to be a model for Simply Lemonade, but I’m too lazy to whip up a batch in my own kitchen and I can’t stand most other brands that taste overly sweet with a fake-tasting lemon acidity. Granted, I just looked up the company and found out that it was originally a sub-brand of Minute Maid, which has since been acquired by Coca Cola. I definitely fell for branding and assumed that it was an independent, possibly even local brand that was having widespread success in supermarkets, like the Kettle Chips brand from Salem. If anyone has a small business lemonade brand that you want some exposure for, send a message to me, Carrieblogger, on Fiverr and we’ll connect the dots. If you can ship me a bottle, I will totally redo these photos with a more genuine, deserving lemonade and offer some free advertising! I mean, I’m not massively against large corporations and broad brands because I’m usually too cheap to pay for the top shelf brand of anything, but I do feel a little duped. I’m still definitely filling up a glass of cool lemonade from this bottle, but I’m also actively willing to swap photos and edit the blog to support a modest bottle of lemonade that Coke doesn’t have its fingers all over. Happy holidays!

National Find a Rainbow Day

Happy National Find a Rainbow Day!

National Find a Rainbow DayHello!

We have enjoyed a massively beautiful week, which made the transition back into life after spring break a little more bearable, but the streak of sunshine is ending tonight. The temperatures have been rising to about 70 degrees in the afternoon and it felt like the evening light lingered a little longer than usual because the clouds didn’t have a damper on it so soon. Unfortunately, I haven’t really even been able to enjoy it! I mean, sure, my eastbound morning commute had me staring in the face of the glaring sun every day this week, and that provided for some out of the ordinary traffic jams, but then I got to work and walked into our windowless band room, which always starts the day around 55 degrees. Over the course of the day, I was able to shed layers as the room heated up a bit so that I was almost acclimated for outside bus duty after school. There was my single moment of bliss in the sunshine! Then, I’d hop in the car, head home, and settle in front of my computer to work the evening away. Now that the weather is changing again, I might be thankful for the windowless room and long list of tasks! It is good to remember that as the rain comes back, so comes the chance for a rainbow. Happy holidays!
